Screwdriver Party

Not exactly as it sounds. See, my mother recently bought some new furniture for our hearth room. This particular type of furniture had to be assembled by hand, and required the use of various screwdrivers. Hence my dad coined the term 'screwdriver party.' There were three (sometimes four) attendance: Dad, Phil, myself, and occasionally Mom. It was kind of funny, seeing as this furtinure looked nice and was cheaper than other sets, to watch Dad and Phil fight with the various wooden boards and such required. After a bit, Phil looks and me and says, "You want to know why this stuff was cheaper?"

"Because it's cheap?" Right on! They eventually got all of the furniture together, so now the hearth room looks a bit better. You can actually have a place to set your coffee down.

Random Useless Fact of the Day: It snowed again last night, so now there's snow sticking to everything but the roads. Thank God for plows.

Friday

Thank God it's Friday. I don't think I can stand another pop test in Alegebra. No, they're not just quizzes, these things are, like, 20, sometimes 25, questions long. (But hey, I'm passing, so that makes anyone happy... Or at least happier.) Did two lessons in Science, so that gets me in a bit better position.

My cousin recently told me that she's doing a research report. Her topic? Evolution. (It's a thesis report.) If there's one thing that severely ticks me off, it's all those people that don't see what's right in front of them and believe evolution is true. A friend of mine told me a bit ago that scientists stopped trying to prove it because they were getting nowhere. Shouldn't that signal something? Shouldn't that be at least a tiny hint of a signal? That's one reason that I don't like people. They're not willing to see what they don't want to see. Grr.

Current Mood: Pensieve (Did I use that in the right context?)

Random Useless Fact of the Day: Got the Series of Unfortunate Events Soundtrack yesterday, w00t! I'm now working on trying to memorize all the words to "Loverly Spring." Yeah, I'm a freak.

'Tis a Sucky Day

Especially if you're a dog. This afternoon, my neighbor came by to return a couple of things. I asked how Abby the Boxer was doing, since she'd been really sick lately. It turns out that she had to be put down (it's not "put to sleep". They're dead.) this morning. The vet originally thought that she had an intestinal blockage, and then maybe a few rips and tears. It was actually a tumor the size of a baseball that was in her liver and stomach. It was impossible to remove it, and even if it was possible to remove it would be useless. It was a cancerous tumor and it had already spread. At best, Abby would've lived about six weeks. If she made it that long, she would've been in agony all the way. It's better to just let any pet die in peace with their family surrounding them, instead of just letting them live in misery for a few weeks. I should know; I've had to see my dog be given "The Shot" before. It's really sad because Abby was only about 3 years old. That's around 28 in dog years. That's my brother's age, for Pete's sake.

This evening we also buried Tugger, a dachsund belonging to a friend of mine. He was plagued with a slipped disc, and the family couldn't afford the (already risky) surgery to fix it. He was a really great little guy; he came from my humane society. I guess he was really lucky to be living with a family that spoiled him rotten; that's all any dog could ask for.

So yeah, today was really crappy. On any and all levels.

Current Mood: Like I need to wash.

Random Useless Fact of the Day: I'm over halfway through the second-to-last book in "The Chronicals of Narnia." Not a bad series, I've read more intriguing stuff.

Nixon, Part II

It appears that Nixon's real owners finally 'fessed up and claimed her. That's a really good thing, and now I can call up the humane society tomorrow and tell people that she won't be coming.

My big drug-addict dog went home this week, yay! At least he gave me a goodbye slurp and a few hairs on my shirt to remember him by.

Mondays must be one of the most boring days of the week.

Current Mood: Slightly tired but satisfied.

random Useless Fact of the Day: The temperature made it into the upper 40s, w00t!

Really Windy.

Today I was walking Liza the black lab, and it was cold. Then, I heard the roaring sound. Little did I know that the roaring was the 40 mph wind gusts. Caught it me full in the unshielded, currently-inhaling face. So after my lungs thawed out, I had to go and deal with the three dogs in my house that also need outside supervision. My lungs, therefore, froze again. Snot-freezing.

We successfully didn't kill Nixon, the little black stray. She had originally come to stay for the weekend, but due to the ailments of Abby the boxer, my neighbors didn't go anywhere. Since that was the case, we took Nixon back to their house this afternoon, thank you God. I'm normally very receptive when it comes to puppies, but my family just doesn't have enough time to care for a puppy, especially an inquisitive one. Nixon's pretty smart, mind you, but I just can't deal with taking care of four dogs (Liza, my own two dogs bean and Pixel, and Nixon) alone all day. It pretty well sucks. Can hardly get anything done.

I get try some of Josh Groban's music, yay.

And tomorrow's Sunday, which means getting up way too early. Boo. Where's coffee when you need it?

Current Mood: Apathetic

Random Useless Fact of the Day: It was snowing sideways this morning.

Nixon

No, I'm not talking about Nixon as in Watergate. I'm talking about Nixon as in, this puppy that my neighbors found in their basement yesterday morning. She's a cute little sucker. I think she's a lab-chow mix. Wonder how she got into my neighbor's basement... I should think that they lock their doors overnight. These people already have two dogs, a boxer that is about the image of stupid (Abby) and a shiztu that is the image of 'little puffball' (Missy).

You might be wondering why I'm calling a female puppy Nixon. It wasn't my idea. It really wasn't. Go blame Phil for this one. (His reasoning for Nixon: Breaking and entering=Watergate=Nixon. Ah, well, I guess it fits.) It's better than Paris... Long story behind that one. It involves an older dog of the same mix named Hilton. But anyways, if an owner doesn't call up looking for a little black puppy, I think we got little Nixon a spot at the humane society...

It's still really cold out.

Got a job this weekend taking care of another Lab, Liza. She's a real sweetheart.

Got my Latin mid-term done, yay!

Current Mood: Brain drained.

Random Useless Fact of the Day: cranked-frowns.blogspot.com is one of the funniest things a sarcastic person will ever read. It's Chris' blog. Heh.

Huh?

Being homeschooled, I don't normally get people copying my answers to essay questions. This year, all of my courses are over the internet. So I had this one assignment a week or so back. I was in the other room just minding my own business, when my mom calls me in and shows me an answer to this particular assignment. She asks me who wrote this answer, and I'm all "Uh... I did?" It looked familiar to me but I didn't look at it too closely, see. Mom scrolls up and I'm all, "What the huh?" because there's this name of this other girl. My answer had been posted waaaay before hers. It turns out she had copied and pasted my answers and passed it off as her own. So, needless to say, I'm ticked. I'm vaguely offended. I'm about ready to bash my head against the desk here. Apparently this one girl thinks that teachers are stupid, which I know to be completely false (except in certain cases, cough cough). I should know; my mom's a college professor. She knows plagiarism when she sees it.

In other news, apparently my older brother Chris has a blog. Too bad I don't know the address. But Mom was saying on the phone earlier that my blog is "just as cynical and sarcastic" as his! Wow! I'm honored! (Even though Mom's pretty disturbed...) My sister Amy says that she's a little freaked that I'm "going ga-ga over boys". Wow, making two people disturbed in one day... My work is done.

Current Mood: Vaguely offended but flattered

Random Useless Fact of the Day: The sun has been shining all day and the snow is melting but it hasn't gotten any warmer. Now that's sad.

Today's News...

From St. Charles, MO. There's a new song running through my head-- "Where is the Love?" by the Black-eyed Peas. I think it's a little funny in the first few lines, since they try to rap. That and the line "Livin' like they ain't got no mommas" just cracks me up. I don't know why. But then, my standards in 'funny' are roughly equivalent to a 6-year-olds.

It's really cold.

This afternoon I had a 60-pound dog sitting in my lap. My legs hurt after a bit because this particular dog (named Zane) wouldn't get off of my lap.

I think I could go for some coffee right now...

Current Mood: Cold

Random Useless Fact of the Day: It's officially cold when you hear of an ice fishing contest in Minnesota being cancled because of the cold. When I talked to my brother Chris the other day it was, like, 5 degrees.

Saturdays

Boy, do I love 'em. One can sleep in, and pretty much make up the day as one goes. Today was pretty boring. I just surfed the internet and played a little piano and listened to my new song obsession from U2. (That would be "Electric Storm", by the way. Love the way this one is mixed, just really cool...)

Mostly hung out at the Apple web site, looking at the various iPods and accessories for iPods and a little bit at the iMac Mini. (How the heck do you make a computer that small??? That's almost obscene!) They've come up with a new kind of iPod called the iPod Shuffle. I have to admit, its mere size (smaller than a five-pack of gum) and price (starting at$99) make it worth looking into. Thing is, I think that it's a tad pointless. It only holds 270 songs, whilst mine can hold from 2,000-5,000. I can just hit the 'shuffle songs' option and it's the same thing, only with 290 (in my library currently, heh heh) songs. But yeah, the iPod shuffle is pretty darn nifty. Within reason, of course. For someone that's not willing to cough up $250-$400 dollars for a mini or full-size iPod, or perhaps someone that has a pretty active lifestyle (jogging, that sort of thing) the Shuffle would be a blessing. Hm... Whatever. I'm quite content with my little 'music shop in my pocket.' ^.^

Went to the Saturday night service at church. Mom doesn't play the piano for tomorrow's services, so I think that we're pretty much going to be playing it heathen in the morning. I think that Saturday service is pretty enjoyable, if a lot more loose than the Sunday ones. For one thing, this is the only occasion on which I am allowed to wear blue jeans and a hoodie to an actual service (and boy does it feel good!).

But you know what? For some reason, I don't feel as welcome at the Saturday service as I do on Sunday mornings. Maybe it's because I'm a lot more used to the Sunday schedule and to the people that I encounter on Sundays. But the Saturday service makes me feel a bit like an outsider, like I'm not really supposed to be there. I'm sure I'm just being 'teenage melodramitic.' That's kind of my personality, to feel like I'm not supposed to be somewhere when really I'm quite fine where I am.

But anyways... Enjoy whatever is left of your weekened, folks.

Current Mood: Jammin'

Random Useless Fact of the Day: That little iMAc mini is only 2 inches tall. For Pete's sake.

If ya don't like it...

There's an old saying here in St. Louis. No, I'm not talking about the saying "Where'd you go to high school?". I'm talking about: "If you don't like the weather in St. Louis, just wait a few days, it'll change."

BOY IS THAT AN UNDERSTATEMENT!!!

Two days ago it was 60 degrees out. Yesterday it was cloudy and cold and we...got...a...BLIZZARD, I'm telling you! Right now the sun's out and it's so bright you can barely see, as opposed to yesterday when the snow was so thick you couldn't see three feet in front of you. Geez. What is it with the weather around here?

The Wednesday night youth thing started up again. Being a junior high-er (only for another few months, only for another few months, only for another few months....), I have to tromp down to Barnwell Middle School with my fellow (?) junior high-ers and endure the idiocy that normally ensues before the service actually starts. For example: The boys found an office chair. The proceeded to jump on and roll so fast that they whacked into the walls, ha ha. Junior high boys are so funny because most of them are so stupid...

Anyways, we had to play this "Superhero Relay Race", which incorporates different running styles into a competetion to see who can reach the wall fastest, or who can fall down the most. Whilst running 'Spider-Man Style' my shoes slipped and my knees landed with a pretty hard whack on the floor, so now they're both bruised, yay. So for the next round I sat down by the wall with the rest of my group, who, like myself, are all physically inept when it comes to athletics.

Got some of my papers done in school. Now all there is left is that thesis essay for English... Woot. Need to review for my History test... The vet called back last night with my dog's blood results; she's getting to be much better (yay!) but will need a stronger dose of meds, but she's doing better. And for that, I am happy.

Current Mood: Happy for the moment

Random Useless Fact of the Day: Liam Aiken facies amabilis habet. (What'd I just say, you ask? Liam Aiken has a very cute face.)

Midwest Weather

This morning I walked outside with my dogs dressed in a heavy coat and a scarf in anticipation of cold temperatures. Boy, was that a mistake! I immediately took said down coat and scarf right off, since the temp was, like, 55 or something. Now it's gotta be around 60. Has no one told El Nino that this is JANUARY?! We should be getting honkin' big ice storms and snot-freezing weather! (as my brother Chris would say...)

The dogs are well. Had to take Beans (my 8-year-old Boston terrier) into the vet for a few yesterday; she had to get her thyroid levels tested. Pixel the pug is still an idiot, and is even funnier now that she's discovered how to be a lap dog. The positions she gets herself into are hilarious. If I had a digital camera I'd show you, but alas, I'm also sort of technologically inept. (Unless it involves a soundboard. Put me there and I'm the happiest 14-year-old in the world.)

School's still a bit of a bear. I've had just a buttload of papers to write-- First a report on the life of Sir Ernest Rutherford, then an essay in art, next up will be a report on Niels Bohr and a reflective essay on the novel "April Morning" by Howard Fast.

Current Mood: Just a little titchy

Random Useless Fact of the Day: Ashlee Simpson's "singing" makes Baby Jesus cry.

D'oh!

History? It sucks. Got a lousy 46 percent... F minus minus. *veinpulse* Well, let's hope I do better on the make-up test... Grr.

It's not that I don't like school, I just wanna beat my head on a wall more than once in a while.

Man, I really need to get to the library to get that book I have to read for English... "April Morning" by Howard Fast. I'm not sure why, the the mere title gives me the heebie-jeebies. The last book I read that had a title that sounded all peaceful (and I mean graveyard peaceful, not rainy day peaceful) was "A Serperate Peace" and it was so flipping depressing I wanted to chuck it across the room...

But then, I'm probably just being melodramatic. But ya know what? I don't care.

Chosen starts in just a few weeks, yay!

Current mood: Twitchy.

Random Useless Fact of the Day: My latest celebrity guy crush is Liam Aiken ("Series of Unfortunate Events"). He's sooo hoootttt... *drools*
